Since today is Harry Potter’s birthday (#HBDHP) I thought that I’d invite you all to consider joining us in October for the annual academic Harry Potter Conference at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia.
Due to COVID-19, the conference will be held virtually this year. This is a genuine bummer because there are so many fun festivities that take place in Chestnut Hill over the weekend that I so look forward to like a massive cosplay pub crawl, a Muggle Quidditch Tournament, and being greeted on an epic stairwell by a choir singing various Harry Potter theme songs from the films (see below).
But the nice thing about the academic conference portion of the weekend being online this year is that a lot of new people will be able check it out for the first time (and then hopefully properly join us in Philly in 2021!). The dates are Friday, October 16 and Saturday the 17th, and the cost is only $15.
If you’re interested to know what the level of discourse is like, I recommend checking out some podcast episodes from Reading, Writing, Rowling and Mugglenet Academia. The conference is always a fun time, and it’s quite interdisciplinary, which makes for a very stimulating conference.
I’m thrilled that I’ll have the chance to give two papers this year, here are the titles:
“Harry Potter and the Black Mirror of Erised: A Pop-Cultural Reflection on the Desire for Transhumanism.”
“”Harry Potter and the Order of the Enneagram: The Centers of Intelligence and the Literary Soul Triptych of Harry, Ron, and Hermione.”
The first paper is a comparative analysis of transhumanistic themes in Harry Potter and Black Mirror, and the other is about how to conceive of the composition of the trio (Harry, Ron, and Hermione) in the light of the Centers of Intelligence from the Enneagram. Stoked to share some of my thoughts on these things!
I hope you’ll consider joining us. Here’s the link to register today (before it sells out): https://harrypotterconferencechc.ticketleap.com/hpac2020/
