If you plan on attending the annual AAR/SBL conference this November in San Diego, CA and enjoy craft beer like we do, then you won’t want to miss out on our reception: the Society for Beer Lovers & Assorted Academic Research (SBLAAR).
Save the Date: Saturday, November 22nd from 7:00pm—10:00pm at Saint Joseph Cathedral (1535 3rd Ave, San Diego, CA 92101).
Like most people who attend AAR/SBL, I thoroughly enjoy the receptions. Meeting up with old friends and watching your bibliography mingle is a lot of fun. Although those who organize the receptions generously offer refreshments, it is usually cheap beer and cheap wine that are on offer. This is understandable because it is very expensive for those funding the event.
To alleviate this problem my officemate Chris and I thought it would be a good idea to organize a reception in which people bring their own craft beer to share. This would also take advantage of the international make-up of the conference and allow for the possibility of showcasing some very rare and otherwise inaccessible beers. So we tried it in Baltimore and had an absolute blast. Fortress Press came alongside and sponsored the event, and the turn out was great. Below you can see the promo trailer we made leading up to last year’s conferences in Baltimore.
This year we want to go Bigger & Better. And that begins with a new logo. Special thanks to fellow Two Cities blogger, Raymond Morehouse, for creating it!
Once again for this year we’re grateful to Fortress Press for sponsoring our reception. And we have five additional partners this time: Eerdmans, Bloomsbury/T&T Clark, Liturgical Press, Somersault Group, and Zondervan Academic; they will each be showcasing a special tasting of their favorite beers for us. Last week we posted a new trailer for the upcoming reception in San Diego this November to announce some of these exciting additions. Check it out below.
In case you were wondering, yes, N.T. Wright’s favorite beer is Guinness.
So do come along and bring some good beer to share! If you are a homebrewer please come and show off your own brews (I’ll be doing the same!). And if you’re not able to bring beer from your current location, perhaps you could buy some local San Diego beer once you arrive. Some good local options are Ballast Point, AleSmith, Stone, Green Flash, and Lost Abbey. You’re also welcome to show up without beer. But for those who bring good beer you will have the opportunity to win one of our great door prizes! And for those of you who bring beer from our wish list you’ll have an opportunity for even greater door prizes!
Here’s our wish list for this year:
