Do you ever wonder what relationships are going to be like in heaven? Will we recognize our family, friends, and significant others? How will we relate to one another, since we’ll all be part of the same family, as brothers and sisters? My coworkers and I recently speculated about heaven, and we mused about how they would relate to their husbands. Would all romantic attraction be gone, since marriage doesn’t exist between people in heaven? Would it just be like, “Hey, I knew you at one point and we shared all these memories together, but now it doesn’t really matter anymore?” Will their children see them as parents or just as equals and think, “Oh, I remember you were my mom and used to tell me what to do, but hey now you’re my sister!” Since there is pure joy and no more pain and no more hurt, will all of the wounds that we’ve inflicted on one another just be forgotten? Or will we still have scars, but see them through a redeemed perspective, so that the joy of the redemption outweighs all of the pain?
Since Christ will be our Bridegroom, and we as His church, are His bride, how does this all work out, as we are collectively together the Bride of Christ? Will we be constantly feasting at the table of the Lord, and enjoying the food we have now? What will our glorified bodies look like? What will they do with the food we consume? How does it all work out? What are we going to be doing in heaven? Will it be a huge party? Will we be singing, and dancing, clapping our hands and praising the Lord? Will we have tasks and jobs? Will we sit around and contemplate and think and study? What will our roles be in heaven?
While I think about all these questions, and leave room for the mystery that we don’t need to have all of these answers and only speculate about things that we won’t know until we get there, the one thing I can be sure of is that heaven will be grand and great because we will fully be with the Lord. We will constantly be worshiping Him because He is the One who is worthy of all glory and praise. The fact that we will always be with Him forever and enjoy and delight in Him forever is what makes heaven our hope. Our broken bodies and broken world won’t hinder us from experiencing the fullness of God any longer, and as we experience complete freedom and transformation in Him, we will experience full and rich relationships with one another. Perhaps, I can see it glimpses of it now in those moments where I give and receive love and feel the depth of love from the Lord and from others. I’m not exactly sure what relationships in heaven are going to look like, but I look forward to it one day.
